Armagh Community Dialogue
Armagh city and district contains a polarised community.
Areas north and east of the district and areas
north and east of the city are largely populated by
Protestants whereas areas south and west of both the
city and district are populated largely by Roman
Catholics. Thankfully
the interfaces between these areas are not currently the
scenes of violence but the potential is there should an
issue arise which provides the spark.
Armagh city and district has also been
characterised as an area where people traditionally say
nothing about politics or religion to their opposite
numbers. Many
local communities suffered greatly from the troubles and
distrust is very high is such areas.
Community Dialogue in Armagh is
attempting to create safe spaces for local people to
meet and dialogue on political and cultural issues
important to them.
This will bring issues into the open and help
promote understanding. Opportunities have been provided for locals to relate their
experiences of the troubles, to explore their respective
cultures – Orange/GAA & St Patrick, for example -
and to debate a range of contentious political issues,
such as, Policing, United Ireland, Integrated Education
, Dealing with the Past, etc.
Quite a number of people
from Armagh have taken part in Community Dialogue residentials.
If you are interested in any of our events please contact Brian Lennon.
